Help us create a one-of-a-kind study abroad adventure for college students. Learn more about our project at www.buildtheship.org
Creating a sailing education program with the highest standards requires a ship of the highest standard. Our topsail schooner was conceptualized by Captain Robert Douglas, Vineyard Haven, MA. His success with the design, construction, and sailing of Shenandoah and the rebuild of Alabama (among countless other projects), makes Captain Douglas an unequalled authority on conventional sailing ships.
Aboard our traditional sailing ship, both staff and learners will be immersed in an environment of endless teachable moments. Sailing to exotic landscapes, interacting with diverse cultures, and exploring the world's oceans will all help create the ultimate environment for active learning.
Students will join the ship in early September in Nice, France. Using the last weeks of the northern summer, we will wind through French, Italian, and Spanish Mediterranean coastal towns making stops along the way as the students acclimate with the ship. Passing through Gibraltar, the ship will make its way down the Moroccan coast visiting the Canary islands and finally the Cape Verde's. The biggest leg of the voyage will be the 2,200 nautical mile sail across the Atlantic from the Cape Verde's to the West Indies.
